Health & Lifestyle - Restaurant Reviews

By Sandy Zimmerman
Most of us who have driven from Las Vegas through California on I-15, have usually stopped at Baker.
After a few hours on the road, this is the perfect place to take a break; and the perfect place to eat has always been the Mad Greek Café.
We are happy to announce that now the Mad Greek Café is here in Las Vegas!

Larry Dabour Jr. – we should call him the Mad Greek, Jr. –has brought all of the delicious flavors of their successful Greek cuisine at the original Mad Greek Cafe, in Baker, for us to enjoy.
His charming strip location welcomes guests to their sidewalk café to sit and watch the people go by.
Life-sized Greek statues decorate the patio, while inside, the atmosphere is truly Greek around the booths.

The menu is smaller with 32-35 items compared to 300 in Baker. You will find all of your favorite Mad Gyro’s, Greek salads, Souvlaki, Hummus, Dolma, and other traditional Greek dishes.
The Mad Greek is one of the few restaurants which serve Mad chicken Gyros.
After the chicken is marinated for two days, the cook debones the whole chicken, layers all of the pieces, slices and cooks to it to perfection on the tall spit, which is identical to the spit used to cook the beef Gyros.
The spit continually moves around keeping the outer top layers evenly done.
And for a great selection, you also can also order lamb Gyros.
The Pita bread is grilled on the stove. These do not have pockets but are Pita wraps for larger portions.
I love Greek salads and can eat them with chicken, lamb, or beef as a whole meal. The Mad Greek's salad has that real Mediterranean taste with feta cheese, olives, two types of lettuce, tomatoes, and a special vinaigrette-style salad dressing – as Larry says, “With a lot of Greek love.”
They even have a Gyro salad.
Another menu item which I have not seen before is the eggplant salad. I like to eat eggplant and salads so it should be a terrific combination.
You can order a larger lunch and dinner with everything on one plate.
Whatever you want, it will be delicious!
Of course they have baklava and other exciting desserts, but you can also have an old-fashioned fruit shake.
If you want casual dining try their larger, 4,500 square foot, Mad Greek Café
on the corner of Sahara and Durango which is opening in mid-December.
With a dining room, full bar and video poker gaming, they can seat 205 people inside and 80 outside on the patio. What a wonderful place for a Greek party! Larry explained, “We will sit down with you and put together whatever you want for your event. Our menu is extensive with over eight pages. If you cannot find what you want, it does not exist.”
In addition to the traditional Greek dishes, they offer lamb shank, roasted lamb, lamb chops, broiled fish, and even their versions of sushi. It is a diverse Greek Middle Eastern menu.
Watch for specials and promotions coming up when they open and don’t forget to ask about their New Year’s Eve party. The meals are reasonable in all of the Mad Greek Café’s.
For information, call 733-2188. The Mad Greek Café’s are located at:
1.) 3049 S. Las Vegas Boulevard, off Convention Center Drive, next to the Encore Resort.
2.) On the corner of Sahara and Durango.
3.) Prim, Nevada, at the Fashion Mall, near the California/ Nevada border. Prim has three hotels with casinos and schedules headliners in their showroom.
4.) With a population of only 914 people according to the 2000 census, Baker, California does not have a traffic light. Just take the exit and you will be there.
